Jatropha Project Ends In Tamale

The five (5) year Jatropha Project was launched at Walewale in the Northern Region on 6th October, 2009. The purpose of the project was to improve sustainable renewable energy development and to mitigate land degradation effects in rural areas of the Northern Region of Ghana. It was also aimed at creating income generating activities as an integrated approach to ensure sustainable livelihood conditions of residents of the identified underserved communities in Northern Region.

Some farmer based organizations from fourteen farming communities including Janga, Yaama, Wungu and Yagba-Kubori all in the West Mamprusi district were to gain financial and seed support from the European Union to undertake the project.

The closing ceremony to mark the end of the project took place between 14th and 20thDecember, 2014. All stakeholders including the local implementing partners made up of the Technology consultancy Centre (TCC), Savannah Agricultural Research Institute (SARI), Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MoFA), Tamale and New Energy, Tamale. TCC was represented by the Director, Dr. George Y. Obeng, Mr. Donald Amrago and Mr. Crossman Hormenoo. 

The program witnessed the general assessment of the project, inspection of machines and assessment of the training programs that took place. Visits were also made to the jatropha farms and locations where the jatropha decorticators and expellers were installed for processing of fruits to seeds and oil.
